Trailer Roundup #1: Transcendence, The Expendables 3, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes + More
It's been a very busy week for trailers, with several first looks at some of next year's most interesting movies. Let's start with two teasers and a trailer for Wally Pfister (Chris Nolan's cinemtaographer)'s Transcendence, starring Johnny Depp. The sci-fi film asks some deep questions about humanity and technology, as evident below with both these teasers and more fleshed out in the trailer. The film is due April 14th 2014 and also stars Morgan Freeman and Rebecca Hall.

And now for something completely different, Sly Stallone and the gang + Snipes, Harrison Ford and a few more return for a third bout in The Expendables 3. Taking a cue out of Anchorman 2's teaser trailer, this teaser sees a line-up of the movie's titular mercenaries in a hangar, silhouetted. It's nothing remarkable, but it's just a teaser, and we should get a much-more action packed trailer closer to the release date when the film arrives in August 15 2014.
Wes Anderson's upcoming The Grand Budapest Hotel, due March 7, 2014, shows off a stellar cast and typical Andersonian quirk with this new character trailer. Raph Fiennes heads the varied cast which includes Willem Dafoe, Saoirse Ronan, Edward Norton, Tilda Swinton and Anderson regulars Bill Murray and Adrien Brody; in what should be another quirky, eccentric outing from Mr. Anderson. Plus, Jeff Goldblum with a mustache!
After successfully relaunching the Apes franchise with Rise of the Planet of the Apes in 2011 and washing most of the bad taste for Tim Burton's ill-fated relaunch away, Andy Serkis (but no one really else involved in Rise) returns as Caesar, in a world where the apes have taken over, and Gary Oldman leads the humans to try and reclaim the earth. The movie, directed by Matt Reeves (Cloverfield) and due out on July 11 2014, has a good post-apocalyptic look to it, and will hopefully continue the good work done by the first film
Speaking of sequels, one of last year's most surprising comedic hits, 21 Jump Street has a sequel due for a June 13 2014 release date. 21 Jump Street 2? No, 22 Jump Street, the title of which a typically deadpan Nick Offerman explains during the trailer. The film looks like it will have the same silly, over the top comedy as the first film; which for anyone who enjoyed the first edition should look forward to see Jenko and Schmidt head off to college to bust a drug ring, again.
And finally, to round the week of trailers out, one that has been out for a few days, but is no less a standout. It is the teaser for Christopher Nolan's Interstellar, due out November 7th 2014. That's a while away yet, and all we have now is some brief footage of Matthew McConaughey tearfully driving through a field interspersed with stock footage of humanity's various space enterprises; but that should be enough until we get a better look next year. And might also tell us some of what the film is actually about.
